TLDR Some ovarian tumors can cause masculinization, and it's important to check for various causes when this symptom is present.
The study, conducted over a 5-year period at a tertiary care gynaecological centre in Chennai, found that out of 592 ovarian malignancies, 36 cases (6.08%) were sex cord stromal tumours, with 4 cases (11%) presenting with virilisation. The most affected age group was 41 to 50 years, with a median age of 45, and the right ovary was more commonly involved. The study emphasized the importance of a comprehensive evaluation for patients with virilisation symptoms to exclude various causes, including ovarian neoplasms. It also highlighted the need for laboratory investigations to assess hyperandrogenism and differentiate between potential causes such as PCOS, CAH, adrenal tumors, and the effects of exogenous androgens. The document did not specify the number of patients studied for the incidence rates of virilization in sex cord-stromal tumors.
