TLDR Identical p53 gene mutations in different cancers suggest the need for careful treatment.
A 32-year-old man with a malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumour (MPTT) on his scalp underwent combination chemotherapy and radiation therapy, followed by surgical excision of the tumour and cervical lymph node dissection. Despite these treatments, he developed small cell carcinoma (SCC) of the common bile duct (CBD) and died one year later. Both the MPTT and SCC shared an identical p53 gene mutation, highlighting the necessity for therapeutic caution due to the potential for aggressive metastasis and secondary malignancies.
