TLDR High androgen levels in Chinese women with PCOS are linked to a higher risk of diabetes and obesity.
The study, which included 883 Chinese women with PCOS and 717 premenopausal controls, found that hyperandrogenemia was significantly associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obesity in these women. Specifically, women with PCOS and normal androgen levels had lower frequencies of obesity and T2DM compared to those with high androgen levels. The odds ratio for T2DM in hyperandrogenic patients was 5.7 (P=0.028), and for obesity (BMI ≥ 25), it was 1.7 (P=0.005). The study highlighted the importance of considering hyperandrogenemia in the management of PCOS, as it is linked to higher risks of metabolic disorders.

Elevated bile acids can inhibit the enzyme AKR1C2, leading to increased DHT levels, which may accelerate hair loss in those predisposed to androgenetic alopecia. Treatments mentioned include topical minoxidil and finasteride.
