TLDR PCOS is a hormonal disorder affecting many women, leading to symptoms like acne and irregular periods, and increasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
The document from 54 years ago provided an overview of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a disorder caused by a defect in ovarian cells leading to hormonal imbalances. The World Health Organization estimated that PCOS affected 116 million women (3.4%) worldwide in 2012. Symptoms included acne, hirsutism, alopecia, skin tags, and weight gain. PCOS was the most common diagnosis in women presenting with amenorrhoea, oligomenorrhoea, or heavy, irregular and prolonged periods, and the most common cause of hirsutism and infertility due to anovulation. Women with PCOS had increased concentrations of circulating androgens and a marked association with insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, obesity, gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
