TLDR Hirsutism in women is linked to PCOS and can cause health issues if untreated.
This study examines hirsutism, characterized by excessive hair growth in females, as a symptom of amenorrhea and its link to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) from both Unani and modern medical perspectives. Unani scholars historically associated hirsutism with menstrual irregularities, suggesting that retained menstrual blood transforms into vapors that manifest as hair. Modern medicine attributes hirsutism to hyperandrogenism, often seen in PCOS. The study reviews Unani texts and modern research, highlighting that untreated hirsutism and amenorrhea can lead to metabolic and reproductive issues. It suggests that herbs like Juniperus communis and Zingiber officinale may help regulate menstrual cycles. The findings underscore the need for integrative research to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for hirsutism.
