TLDR High-dose oral minoxidil can improve hair growth but may cause side effects.
This retrospective study involving 57 patients assessed the safety and efficacy of high-dose oral minoxidil (>5 mg) for treating androgenetic alopecia. The findings indicated an overall improvement in hair density of 10-30% for most patients, with 17.5% experiencing significant improvements (>50%) and another 17.5% showing less than 10% improvement. However, 24.6% of patients developed adverse effects, including hypertrichosis (17.5%) and tachycardia (3.5%). While high-dose oral minoxidil shows promise as a treatment option, further research is needed to optimize its use and fully understand its safety and efficacy.
