TLDR A kidney transplant and immunosuppressive treatment stopped the skin disease in a patient.
This case study reported on a 40-year-old male with hidradenitis suppurativa and renal failure who experienced total regression of his skin disease following a renal transplant and subsequent immunosuppressive treatment. Initially, cyclosporine monotherapy showed no effect on the skin condition. However, after receiving a kidney transplant and being treated with an immunosuppressive regimen including tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil, the patient showed no signs of disease activity for one year, with only old scars remaining. This case suggested that controlling the inflammatory component of hidradenitis suppurativa is crucial and indicated that organ transplantation could be beneficial for patients with this condition.
