TLDR Expert surgeons have a lower rate of hidden damage to hair during hair transplant procedures than beginners.
In 2016, a study involving 20 patients examined hidden transection rates during Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a type of hair transplantation. The study compared the performance of an expert and a beginner surgeon, revealing that while visible transection rates were similar, the hidden transection rate was significantly higher for the beginner at 8% compared to 2% for the expert. The findings highlighted the importance of considering both visible and hidden transections to accurately assess the real transection rate in FUE. The study suggested that excessive or deep punch insertion could cause hidden transections and noted the need for further research to understand the effects of hidden transection on hair regrowth and the influence of different variables. However, the study was limited by its small size and the high transection rate from the test punches used.
