TLDR Follicular Unit Extraction should be limited to preserve donor hair density and avoid side effects.
The document from May 2018 examined the impact of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) on the donor area in hair restoration procedures. The study involved 10 male patients and found that the average hair count in the donor area was 154.76 hair per cm2, with 54.85 hair per cm2 being extracted, which was about 35.44% of the total donor density. The study concluded that FUE should be performed with caution due to varying donor density. The authors recommended limiting FUE to less than 35% of total hair density in the first session and not more than 10-20% in the second session. They also suggested combining FUE with Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) to maximize the number of grafts/hair in a given session. The document also noted potential side effects of FUE, including visible scarring, skin necrosis, and cyst formation.
