TLDR Higher inflammation markers are linked to more severe alopecia areata.
This study evaluated hematological and inflammatory parameters in 100 patients with alopecia areata compared to 100 controls. It found that patients with alopecia areata had significantly higher levels of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and mean platelet volume (MPV) than the control group. Additionally, higher levels of ESR, CRP, and the neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio were associated with increased disease severity, as measured by the severity alopecia tool score. No significant differences were observed in red cell distribution width (RDW) and neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio between the two groups.
