TLDR Alopecia areata patients may have hearing loss linked to the condition's severity and duration.
The study investigated the potential link between alopecia areata (AA) and hearing loss by examining 40 Egyptian participants, split evenly between AA patients and controls. It found that AA patients experienced significant sensorineural hearing loss compared to controls. This hearing loss was directly correlated with the severity, duration, and recurrence of AA, suggesting that the autoimmune process affecting melanocytes in AA might also impact hearing function.
