TLDR High-resolution x-ray images showed three main structures in human hair: medulla, cortex, and cuticle.
Researchers used Zernike type phase contrast hard x-ray microscopy with 6.95 keV photon energy to investigate the structure of hair fibers from healthy individuals. This method provided high-resolution images that revealed three distinct structures within the hair: the medulla, cortex, and cuticular layer. The study noted various detailed characteristics of each sample, which could serve as foundational data for further morphological studies of human hair.
