TLDR Hair transplantation between identical twins can successfully treat severe, nonprogressive hair loss due to follicular aplasia.
In 1988, Arthur P. Bertolino, M.D., Ph.D., reported a unique case of hair transplantation between identical twins. The procedure was used to treat severe congenital, nonprogressive alopecia due to follicular aplasia in one twin. The unaffected twin served as the donor for scalp isografts. After four test plugs were successfully accepted and showed hair growth within 2 months, 280 additional plugs were transplanted over three sessions, leading to a significant improvement in hair density. This case demonstrated a unique use of isograft transplantation as a practical treatment for a rare clinical disorder.
