TLDR Hair transplant surgery reduces scalp sensitivity by almost 40%, and smokers have less scalp sensitivity than non-smokers. The time since surgery doesn't significantly affect this.
In 2020, a study involving 50 participants (25 healthy individuals and 25 patients who had undergone hair transplant surgery) was conducted to compare scalp two-point discrimination (2PD) values. The results showed a 39.5% decrease in scalp sensitivity after hair transplant surgery, with the average 2PD score being 17.80 mm in patients compared to 12.76 mm in controls. Additionally, smokers were found to have less scalp sensitivity than non-smokers. The study also revealed that the time elapsed since surgery (less than or more than 18 months) did not significantly impact scalp sensitivity.
