TLDR Scalp cooling can effectively prevent hair loss during chemotherapy in pregnancy.
This case report details the successful use of scalp cooling to preserve hair in a 38-year-old pregnant woman undergoing chemotherapy with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (AC) for breast cancer. Despite the common occurrence of hair loss with AC, the patient retained nearly 100% of her hair after 4 cycles, and experienced minimal hair loss (<5%) during subsequent treatment with paclitaxel, trastuzumab, and pertuzumab postpartum. The report highlights the potential effectiveness and safety of scalp cooling during pregnancy, suggesting that pregnancy-related hair changes may contribute to hair preservation. This case underscores the importance of considering scalp cooling to alleviate the psychological distress of alopecia in pregnant patients undergoing chemotherapy.
