TLDR Higher magnesium and calcium in hair are linked to better brain blood flow in older adults.
The study examined 66 healthy elderly individuals (31 men, 35 women, average age 75.6 years) to investigate the relationship between cerebral blood flow, intelligence, psychological factors, and hair mineral content, specifically magnesium and calcium. The analysis found no correlation between age, blood pressure, and hair magnesium or related minerals. However, there was a significant positive correlation between average cerebral blood flow and hair magnesium (r=0.428) and calcium (r=0.35), while phosphorus showed a negative correlation. No correlation was found between hair minerals and verbal or performance intelligence or depression levels. Men had significantly lower levels of magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium in their hair compared to women, and also had significantly lower cerebral blood flow, though no gender differences were observed in intelligence.
