TLDR Sulfur-containing radioprotectors can protect hair from X-ray damage if given before exposure but worsen damage if given after.
The study explored the effects of sulfur-containing radioprotectors on hair dysplasia caused by X-irradiation. It identified two mechanisms of hair dysplasia: one highly sensitive to oxygen and another more resistant to anoxia. Cystamine, when administered before irradiation, protected the hair bulb by inducing anoxia at lower doses and through its own action at higher doses. However, when cysteamine and cystamine were injected after irradiation, they increased the dysplasia caused by X-rays.
