TLDR Hair cortisol may help identify adrenal insufficiency in sickle cell disease patients.
The study investigated the relationship between hair cortisol content (HCC) and clinical measures in individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). Hair samples from 73 subjects were analyzed, revealing that higher hemoglobin S levels were associated with lower HCC, suggesting decreased cortisol levels in more severe cases of SCD. This was consistent with findings that individuals on chronic blood transfusion programs, which improve quality of life and reduce hemoglobin S levels, had higher HCC. The study highlighted a potential link between SCD and adrenal insufficiency (AI), recommending that clinicians follow guidelines for AI testing and treatment. Hair cortisol was suggested as a useful tool for evaluating AI risk in SCD patients.
