TLDR Green tea extract increases lipid production in human sebaceous gland cells.
The study conducted 12 years ago investigated the effects of aqueous Green tea on lipid production in SZ95 cells, which are cells of the sebaceous gland responsible for synthesizing and accumulating lipid droplets. The researchers found that Green tea increased lipid droplets in a dose-dependent manner compared to the control. Furthermore, after treating SZ95 cells with Green tea, the cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner. This suggests that Green tea could potentially influence the production of sebum, a lipid mixture secreted onto the skin by human sebaceous glands.
