TLDR Biopsy is crucial to correctly diagnose granuloma annulare, which can mimic other conditions like alopecia mucinosa.
This case report describes a 6-year-old girl with granuloma annulare (GA) mimicking alopecia mucinosa, presenting as a hairless patch on her leg. Initially suspected to be alopecia mucinosa due to clinical and dermoscopic findings, a biopsy confirmed interstitial GA. The child was treated with topical mometasone furoate, resulting in complete resolution of the lesion after 7 months. This case highlights the importance of biopsy in distinguishing GA from other conditions like alopecia mucinosa, as GA can present atypically. The study suggests that dysregulation of the JAK-STAT pathway in GA might contribute to hair loss.
