The Presence of Glycoproteins in the Cell Membrane Complex of Various Keratin Fibers

Anthony K. Allen, J. Hugh Ellis, Donald E. Rivett
TLDR Glycoproteins are present in the cell membranes of various keratin fibers.
The study extracted cell membrane complex preparations using formic acid from human hair and nail, as well as from the hair of various animals including sheep, alpaca, rabbit, rat, cat, and dog. These preparations were found to have similar amino acid compositions and contained carbohydrates. The sugars identified were typical of those found in membrane glycoproteins, and all preparations reacted with peroxidase-conjugated lectins, indicating the presence of glycoproteins in the cell membrane complex of these keratin fibers.
