TLDR Elderly people, especially with chronic conditions, are more at risk of severe COVID-19 complications and need preventive care and social support.
This systematic review, conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighted the increased vulnerability of elderly patients, particularly those with preexisting chronic conditions, to severe complications and mortality from the virus. Out of 1,360 articles screened, 35 were included, revealing that organ damage to the pulmonary, cardiovascular, liver, and renal systems was more prevalent in elderly patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study emphasized the importance of preventive, multidisciplinary, and holistic approaches to mitigate the disease's impact on this demographic. Additionally, it recommended maintaining social contact through online platforms and phone calls to support the mental health of elderly individuals during the pandemic.
