TLDR Different long non-coding RNAs in yaks change during hair growth cycles and are involved in key growth pathways.
In 2020, a study was conducted to understand the role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) in the hair follicle growth cycle of yaks. The researchers identified 2884 lncRNAs across five phases of the hair follicle cycle. They found that the expression of these lncRNAs varied significantly across different phases, with 198 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) in October versus January, 280 DELs in January versus March, and 340 DELs in March versus October. The study also revealed that these lncRNAs were involved in critical pathways for hair follicle development, such as the Wnt signaling pathway, VEGF signaling pathway, and signaling pathways regulating pluripotency of stem cells. Furthermore, by comparing the yak lncRNA data with previously published data on cashmere goats, the researchers identified 24 sequence-conserved DELs, highlighting the limited degree of sequence conservation of lncRNAs. This study expanded the understanding of how lncRNAs influence hair cycling and provided valuable insights into the functionality and mechanism of lncRNAs.
