TLDR Curcuma aeruginosa rhizome extracts show potential as anticancer agents, with varying effectiveness against breast cancer cells.
In 2021, a study analyzed the bioactive compounds and anticancer activity in rhizome extract of ten Curcuma aeruginosa accessions. The GC-MS analysis identified 71 compounds, with isocurcumenol being the most dominant. The cytotoxic activity was tested against MCF-7 (Human breastadeno carcinoma) and Vero cell lines, with activity ranging from 13.28% to 45.17% in the Vero cell line and 1.16% to 49.70% against the MCF-7 cell line. The highest anticancer activity was found in MD accessions. The study concluded that these accessions could be used as quality raw materials for the pharmaceutical and food industry and could be further developed to obtain superior varieties through plant breeding programs.
