TLDR Ganoderma lucidum extract and its component, ganoderic acid A, may effectively prevent hair loss.
The study "LB1680 Effects of ganoderma lucidum extract and its active component, ganoderic acid A on hair loss prevention" investigated the effects of Ganoderma Lucidum (G. Lucidum) and Ganoderic acid A (GAA) on hair loss prevention. The research found that both G. Lucidum extract and GAA improved the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells and human hair germinal matrix cells, increased the expression of growth factors such as VEGF and IGF-1 in each hair cell, and showed hair follicle growth in length and diameter. They also suppressed the progression to the catagen phase of the hair growth cycle. In a 24-week, randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial, G. Lucidum extract and GAA applied to shampoo and tonic formulations significantly inhibited hair loss. The results suggest that G. Lucidum extract and GAA could be effective therapeutics for the treatment of hair loss.
