TLDR Wearing a ponytail often is linked to hair loss at the front of the scalp in Chinese women.
The study investigated the association between frontal pattern hair loss and ponytail hairstyle among Chinese women. Forty-three women presenting with frontal alopecia at a hospital hair clinic were studied. The results showed that 79% (34 out of 43) of these women frequently styled their hair in a ponytail for an average of 10.5 years, with 70% of those showing signs of fibrosis, suggesting irreversible damage. This study is the first to demonstrate a significant association between frontal pattern hair loss and the cultural practice of wearing a ponytail among Chinese women. The findings highlight the need for awareness about the medical implications of certain hairstyles and the potential for preventive treatments for hair loss.
