TLDR Applying minoxidil on the scalp after mesotherapy injections caused temporary swelling.
In 2015, a 37-year-old woman with female androgenetic alopecia underwent four sessions of scalp mesotherapy using intradermal biotin injections, with no complications. However, after the fourth session, a 5% minoxidil solution was applied topically, resulting in a firm frontal edema 16 hours later. The edema resolved in two days, and no complications were observed in the fifth session where minoxidil was not applied. The researchers concluded that the edema was likely due to excessive absorption of the topically applied minoxidil, which acted as a local vasodilator, following the mesotherapy injections. This case was unique as no previous cases of facial edema due to minoxidil application, either topically or by mesotherapy injection, were found in the medical literature.
