TLDR Both follicular unit extraction and scalp expanders effectively treat secondary cicatricial alopecia, with scalp expanders leading to quicker and denser hair growth.
The study conducted in 2020 involved 30 patients suffering from secondary cicatricial alopecia, divided into two groups: 13 underwent follicular unit extraction (FUE) and 17 had scalp expanders (SE). The results showed that the surface area of alopecia was significantly larger in the SE group than the FUE group, with a p-value <0.001. Post-operative recovery was similar in both groups, but the SE group experienced faster hair gain and better hair density. The study concluded that both FUE and SE are effective tools in managing secondary cicatricial alopecia when properly selected and tailored to the patient's needs.
