TLDR Finasteride effectively and safely treats recurrent priapism in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease.
The study evaluated the use of finasteride in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease who experienced recurrent priapism. The study found that a low daily dose of finasteride appears to represent an effective and safe form of treatment for recurrent priapism in children and adolescents with SCD. After treatment, four patients had no episodes of priapism, and one patient reported stuttering priapism. No side effects were reported, and all patients reported normal, full erections. The authors recommend that finasteride be used in selected cases only and in low doses for a short period of time.
