Outcomes Associated With the Use of Finasteride: An Evaluation of This Medication as a Chemoprotective Agent and Its Efficacy

    Catherine H. Cieslik
TLDR Finasteride can't be recommended for cancer prevention due to concerns about high-grade cancer risk.
The study evaluated the use of finasteride as a chemoprotective agent against prostate cancer. A systematic review of four articles revealed that while finasteride reduced PSA levels and prostate size, it also led to a decrease in prostate cancer incidence. However, the detected cancers were often high-grade. Further analysis suggested that the incidence of high-grade cancer might not be as significant as initially thought, but the evidence was insufficient to rule out finasteride as a cause of increased high-grade cancer detection. The conclusion was that finasteride could not be recommended as a chemoprotective agent without further research to confirm its safety regarding high-grade cancer incidence.
