TLDR The study explored a possible link between finasteride use and suicide.
In 2020, a study was conducted to investigate the link between the use of finasteride, a drug used to treat hair loss and prostate conditions, and suicide. The study was based on cases where medical records and autopsy reports were available for review. Additional information was obtained from suicide notes, journals/emails of the deceased, and narratives by relatives. The data extracted followed guidelines from the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology and the International Society of Pharmacovigilance, including details such as age, sex, medical history, drug dosage, duration of therapy, symptoms reported, and cause of death. The study also referenced the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System for context.
