TLDR The Fibonacci 'snail' flap heals faster and looks better than skin grafts for scalp reconstruction.
The study compared the effectiveness of the Fibonacci sequence 'snail' flap to skin grafts in scalp reconstruction among 45 patients over a 3-year period. The results indicated that the 'snail' flap healed significantly faster and had lower complication rates than full-thickness skin grafts, although the difference in complication rates was not statistically significant. Additionally, the 'snail' flap provided superior aesthetic outcomes in terms of color, contour match, and hair restoration. The study concluded that the Fibonacci 'snail' flap was a viable option for reconstructing medium to large scalp defects, even in patients with poor performance scores, and could be performed under local anesthesia due to its lower flap-to-defect ratio. Future studies were suggested to further compare the advantages of the 'snail' flap over other scalp flaps.
