TLDR Young female athletes should be informed about health risks like menstrual issues and bone problems from excessive sports.
This study evaluated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of the female athlete triad (FAT) and its relationship with gynecologic complaints in young Turkish female athletes. It involved 172 participants, including 87 athletes and 85 sedentary students. The study found that athletes had a significantly lower body mass index (BMI) and experienced more menstrual irregularities, such as late menstruation and oligo-amenorrhea, compared to the sedentary group. Conversely, cold hands and hair loss were more common in the sedentary group. The study concluded that excessive sports activity could be hazardous for young females, particularly athletes, due to its potential impact on BMI and menstrual health. It emphasized the need for awareness and precautions to ensure the benefits of sports activities without adverse health effects.
