TLDR Hormonal imbalances in women can cause acne, excess hair growth, and hair loss, needing combined medical and mental health care.
Hormonal imbalances, particularly those involving androgens, significantly impact dermatological conditions such as acne, hirsutism, and alopecia. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, characterized by excess androgens and insulin resistance, exacerbate these skin issues. Hormonal acne, often appearing on the lower face, can be treated with hormonal contraceptives, antiandrogens, or isotretinoin. Hirsutism is assessed with scoring systems and managed with hormonal and cosmetic treatments. Hormonal hair loss, including female pattern thinning and telogen effluvium, is linked to estrogen withdrawal or thyroid issues, diagnosed through trichoscopy and hormonal profiling. Key tests include testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels. A multidisciplinary approach involving dermatological, gynecological, and endocrine care, along with mental health support, is crucial for improving outcomes.
