TLDR Mupirocin ointment effectively treats feline acne.
The study described the clinical and diagnostic parameters and the response to topical mupirocin in 25 cats with feline acne. The chin was the most commonly affected area, with clinical signs including crusts, comedones, erythema, alopecia, pruritus, and nodules/fistulas. Diagnostic tests included deep skin scrapings, cytological examinations, and fungal cultures. Dermatophytes and Malassezia pachydermatis were identified in a few cases. Skin biopsies showed dilatation of sebaceous gland ducts and pyogranulomatous inflammation. All cats were treated with 2% mupirocin ointment twice daily for 3 weeks. The treatment response was excellent in 15 cats, good in nine, and one cat had a contact reaction. The response in cats with dermatophyte or yeast involvement was also positive.
