TLDR Iron chloride helps create compounds that could be useful in medicine, like treating hair loss.
In 2014, Mani et al. conducted a study where they synthesized 2-hydroxypyrrolidine and 2-hydroxypiperidine derivatives through a FeCl3-catalyzed C-N coupling reaction between cyclic ethers and heterocyclic amines. The derivatives were characterized using various spectral analyses, and the study noted their potential in medical applications, including the treatment of androgenic alopecia with minoxidil, a piperidine derivative. The optimal reaction conditions were identified, and FeCl3.6H2O was found to be a more effective catalyst than CeCl3.7H2O. The study concluded that these compounds could be valuable in medicinal chemistry, with further biological evaluation and Structure-Activity Relationship studies to follow. The number of compounds synthesized or the yield percentages were not provided, but successful synthesis and characterization were indicated for some compounds.
