TLDR Pharmacists play a key role in helping patients use over-the-counter products correctly, including those for hair regrowth and smoking cessation.
In the March/April 1997 issue of the Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the authors discussed the trend of prescription products moving to over-the-counter (OTC) status, leading to increased patient inquiries to pharmacists. The article emphasized the role of pharmacists in guiding patients on the correct use of these products, especially in personal care for hair regrowth, like Rogaine, and smoking cessation. It highlighted the need for realistic expectations and an integrated approach to smoking cessation, while also addressing the potential misuse of these products by adolescents. The article reviewed several new OTC products, providing detailed information on their indications, active ingredients, and patient guidance. It also discussed treatments for lice, the effectiveness of Rogaine for androgenic alopecia, and the importance of continuous use for hair regrowth, as well as the role of nicotine gum or transdermal systems in smoking cessation.
