TLDR More research is needed to understand coat funk in Alaskan malamutes.
The study aimed to identify clinical and diagnostic differences between Alaskan malamutes with a condition known as coat funk and those with normal coats. Five dogs with normal pelage and five with coat funk were examined through physical exams, skin biopsies, and various laboratory tests, including blood counts and hormone evaluations. Affected dogs showed varying degrees of hair loss on the dorsal neck, tail, and trunk, but no consistent diagnostic markers were found to distinguish them from normal dogs. The study concluded that the small sample size and lack of distinct differences limited the ability to differentiate coat funk from other hair loss conditions in Alaskan malamutes, suggesting that larger studies are needed for better understanding.
