Eyelash Growth from Application of Bimatoprost in Gel Suspension to the Base of the Eyelashes

In a study from 13 years ago, researchers found that bimatoprost in gel suspension applied to the base of the eyelashes significantly increased eyelash length. The trial included 19 subjects who used the product every evening for 6 weeks, resulting in a mean eyelash growth of 2.0 mm in the bimatoprost group compared to 1.1 mm in the placebo group, with this difference being statistically significant (P=0.009). No significant changes in visual acuity or iris pigmentation were noted, although some temporary side effects were reported. Four subjects withdrew due to irritation or concerns about side effects. The study concluded that bimatoprost is effective for eyelash growth and its effects may last for at least three months post-treatment, but further research is needed to assess potential side effects and the role of the control substance, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The authors recommend that bimatoprost use should be monitored by an ophthalmologist.
