TLDR Permed hair degrades faster and shows more damage after protease treatment compared to untreated hair.
The study assessed the impact of permanent wave treatment on hair using an enzymatic method, finding negligible morphological differences between untreated and permed hair initially. However, after protease treatment, permed hair showed accelerated degradation and significant morphological differences compared to untreated hair. The extent of degradation correlated with hair damage, advancing from the surface to the inner hair fiber, and was associated with a structural change from Alpha-helix to random coil. The degradation of damaged hair with protease was closely related to the denaturation of the Alpha-helical region.

Blocking DHT is not a cure for hair loss; instead, altering how scalp follicles respond to DHT might be more effective. Current treatments like topical finasteride and minoxidil are temporary solutions, and future approaches may involve gene therapy and bioengineering to change follicle behavior.

Switching from finasteride to dutasteride can improve hair regrowth with fewer side effects for some users. Concerns about shedding, lack of improvement, and the long-term safety of oral minoxidil remain.
