TLDR Androgen receptors significantly affect hair loss in women with androgenetic alopecia.
The study investigated the hormonal and receptor characteristics of 25 female patients with androgenetic alopecia. Serum androgens, gonadotropins, oestradiol, and sex hormone binding globulin were measured, and skin biopsies were performed on 16 patients to assess androgen receptor (AR) levels. Results showed that mean serum hormone levels were normal, but 75% of patients had positive cytoplasmic AR, and 50% had nuclear AR, indicating high androgen sensitivity. No correlation was found between serum androgen levels and AR presence. The findings suggested that androgen receptors play a significant role in regulating hair follicles in female androgenetic alopecia.
