In the 2018 study, researchers aimed to optimize the production of wedelolactone, a medicinally valuable compound, through cell suspension culture (CSC) of Eclipta alba. They found that the best biomass accumulation occurred in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1.5 mg L−¹ picloram and 0.5 mg L−¹ kinetin at an agitation speed of 120 rpm. The addition of yeast extract, a biotic elicitor, at 150 mg L−¹ increased the wedelolactone content by 1.22-fold after 120 hours of incubation, while 100 µM of methyl jasmonate, an abiotic elicitor, increased wedelolactone content by 1.09-fold without affecting biomass. The study also successfully developed a protocol for regenerating complete plantlets from CSC. These findings have potential applications in the biotechnological production of wedelolactone to meet industrial demands.
