TLDR Eflornithine cream makes laser hair removal more effective for treating pseudofolliculitis barbae.
This study investigated the effectiveness of adding topical eflornithine to standard laser hair removal for treating pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) in 27 male patients. The trial was randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled, with patients receiving laser treatments every 4 weeks for 16 weeks. Eflornithine cream was applied to one side of the neck, while a placebo was applied to the other. Results showed a significant reduction in hair and inflammatory papules on the eflornithine-treated side, with a median hair reduction of 99.5% compared to 85.0% on the placebo side. The study concluded that eflornithine enhanced the efficacy of laser treatment for PFB, although follow-up was limited to 16 weeks.
