BH12 Efficacy and Safety of Hair Gloss Treatments: A Systematic Review of Licensed Products in the UK

    Stuttee Mehra
TLDR Licensed hair gloss products improve shine and smoothness but require stricter regulation to ensure safety.
This systematic review evaluates the efficacy, safety, and formulation of licensed hair gloss products in the UK, analyzing 22 studies with 1,000 participants. Key findings indicate that 85% of users experienced improved shine and smoothness, with 72% noting enhanced hydration and reduced frizz lasting 4-6 weeks. Products with panthenol and plant-based proteins were particularly effective. While 82% of products adhered to MHRA standards, 18% contained harmful ingredients causing mild scalp irritation and allergic responses. Licensed products like Wella Professionals Shinefinity and L’Oréal DIA Light Gloss had excellent safety profiles. The review emphasizes the need for stricter regulatory oversight and clinician guidance, recommending dermatologists educate patients on choosing licensed products and highlight risks of unregulated formulations.
