TLDR Peginterferon alpha-2a effectively treats acute hepatitis C in hemodialysed patients, despite some side effects.
The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of peginterferon alpha-2a in 55 Albanian hemodialysed patients with acute hepatitis C. The results showed an early virologic response rate of 84.8% and a sustained virologic response rate of 78.2%. Despite the patients' fragile immune status and underlying diseases, the treatment was effective, although it was associated with several adverse effects. The most common side effects included flu-like symptoms (83%), hair loss (36.3%), and anemia (96.3%). Overall, the adverse effects were considered minimal compared to the treatment's efficacy.
