TLDR Excimer light therapy is more effective than low level laser therapy for treating alopecia areata.
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of excimer light 308 nm versus low level light therapy (LLLT) in treating alopecia areata (AA) on the scalp. Thirty patients with multilocular AA were divided into two groups: one treated with excimer light and the other with LLLT, with sessions twice weekly for 3 months and a follow-up period of 3 months. Both treatments showed significant improvement in treated patches compared to control patches, with excimer light showing better and more sustained improvement. Dermoscopy results showed no significant difference between the two groups in terms of short vellus hair and regrowing hair. Side effects were minimal and transient in both groups. The study concluded that both treatments are safe and effective, with excimer light being more effective despite its higher cost.
