TLDR Kigelia africana fruit extract can prevent and reverse prostate enlargement in rats.
The study explored the effects of the lipidosterolic hexane extract (LHE) from Kigelia africana fruits on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in testosterone-induced Sprague-Dawley rats, using groups of 5 rats each. LHE at 100 mg/kg significantly reduced the prostate index, prostatic weight, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone levels, and improved histopathological changes, indicating its potential to prevent and reverse BPH. The extract's efficacy, superior to β-sitosterol alone, suggests a synergistic effect with other components like fatty acids and antioxidants. This supports the traditional use of Kigelia africana for reproductive disorders and its potential as a natural BPH treatment with fewer side effects than conventional therapies.
