TLDR Zinc pyrithione in shampoo effectively treats dandruff.
The document reviewed the effectiveness of Zinc pyrithione as an active ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoo formulations. Dandruff, characterized by excessive scalp exfoliation, itching, and hair loss, can be caused by the microorganism Malassezia furfur. Zinc pyrithione not only acts as an antifungal agent that inhibits the growth of this fungus but also serves as a cytostatic agent, slowing down the rate of epidermal turnover and thereby reducing dandruff. The literature review, which included national and international journals, concluded that 1% Zinc pyrithione in shampoo is effective in treating dandruff, aligning with the Food and Drug Control Agency's regulation that limits Zinc pyrithione to 2% in rinse-off products and 0.1% in leave-on products.
