TLDR Type 2 diabetes does not change how metformin works in obese pregnant women, so dosage adjustments are not needed.
The study investigated how Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) affects the pharmacokinetics of metformin in obese pregnant women, comparing eight non-diabetic obese pregnant women with PCOS and nine obese pregnant women with T2DM. Both groups were on a regimen of 850 mg of metformin every 12 hours during the third trimester. The study found no significant differences in pharmacokinetic parameters between the two groups, suggesting that T2DM and insulin use do not alter the pharmacokinetics of metformin in these patients. Therefore, the study concluded that there is no need to adjust the metformin dosage for pregnant women with PCOS and T2DM based on these findings.
