TLDR Finasteride significantly reduces DHT levels in male dogs without affecting testosterone levels, suggesting it could be used to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy in dogs weighing 10 to 50 kilograms.
The study aimed to investigate the effect of finasteride on the serum concentrations of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone (T) in sexually intact adult male dogs. The dogs were given different dosages of finasteride for 7 days, and blood samples were taken before and during the treatment period. The results showed that finasteride caused a significant decrease in DHT concentration by 55%, but had no effect on T concentration. The conclusion was that finasteride at these doses can effectively reduce DHT levels in male dogs. The study suggests that finasteride may be a suitable treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy in dogs weighing between 10 to 50 kilograms.
